Parenting Desires and Strategies of Gay Men and Lesbian Women in the Czech Republic

Information

Despite growing research on parenting in lesbian families but also other families that do not include heterosexual couple relations, there is a lack of knowledge on parenting desires and intentions of persons not aiming to live in a co-resident heterosexual couple. This paper employs a mixed methods approach that combines survey data with problem-centred interviews with self-identified gay, lesbian and bisexual persons living in the Czech Republic. Survey data were helpful in exploring the relations between this population´s parenting desires, intentions and strategies, and factors associated with them. Qualitative data helped to explore and classify types of imagined and realized families with children of gay, lesbian and bisexual persons, and to understand the processes and constrains that lead to these various imaginaries and life strategies to achieve them. Altogether, quantitative and qualitative data contributed to better understanding of gay, lesbian and bisexual persons´ parenting desires, intentions and strategies in a heteronormative context of the Czech Republic.
