Based on the importance of parent-child contact during foster care placement, the Foster Care and Adoption Research Group of the University of Malaga carried out a study on the needs of foster children, birth families, non-kinship foster families and social workers in regard to contact visits. Some important conclusions were: a) the need to promote parental and emotional competencies of the biological families due to the role they play during the contact visits; b) the need to support foster families and improve their capacities for managing and preparing contact visit; and c) the lack of Spanish family support programs to promote the quality of contact visits during placement. The present work is the consolidation of different projects and publications of this research group and had as a result the design and implementation of the programme Visits: a context for family development (Bernedo et al., 2021). This psychoeducational intervention program aimed to improve the quality of contact visits between foster children and their birth families through the promotion of parental, educational and emotional competencies of biological and foster families. The program included two training modules, one for each family. Each module, consists of six individual sessions and one group session, with an approximate duration of 1 hour. Birth families were trained to transmit appropriate messages to children and received coaching in regard of the types of gifts, snacks and age-appropriate topics of conversation during visits. On their side, foster families were trained to identify more accurately the child’s emotional state before and after the visits. Finally, both families have been trained in specific communication and educational skills, among other relevant aspects for the quality of the visits. This program will be useful for professionals working in the child protection system.
